Contemporary Botanical Prints

As I assemble and paint my botanical artworks, I am endeaouring to reinterpret the Dutch still-life tradition through a contemporary process that combines original photography, digital collage, and painterly composition.  Influenced by the intricate botanical textiles of William Morris, this body of work explores pattern, ornament and the relationship between flora and decorative form. The digitally reimagined vessels draw on the richness and complexity of Morris's designs, bringing these historical influences into a contemporary context. Vessels are derived from details of my original artworks and digitally reimagined into ornate patterned forms that reference historical still-life painting while introducing a contemporary, surreal sensibility.

The flowers featured in the collection are grown in our New Zealand garden by my husband and myself and individually photographed by me at different stages of bloom and decay. Insects and botanical elements are photographed from life within our garden, while selected found objects—including jewellery and personal curiosities—are woven into the compositions as symbolic details and quiet narrative clues.

Birds and hybrid creatures are constructed from photographic fragments layered with flowers, textures, and other visual elements to create dreamlike forms that exist between the natural and the imagined.

Each work is developed through a meticulous, multi-stage process that results in richly layered collector’s prints celebrating abundance, memory, and the extraordinary intricacy of the natural world.
